Our Dreams As Big As The Sky Above Orangi

My Silent Words

I still remember the day I walked through Orangi’s narrow, dusty streets to interview for a job – my heart was as heavy as my footsteps. As a newly divorced mother in South Asia’s largest slum, Orangi. I clutched my dreams close, though they felt as fragile as paper boats in a storm. But that day, walking into a Developments in Literacy (DIL) office, I didn’t know I was walking into my salvation.
Imagine if every meal was a calculation and every day tested your will to keep going. That was me – a single mother, emotionally wounded, wondering how I’d feed my child tomorrow. But DIL saw potential when I saw only despair.

From a nervous first-time teacher to a College Coordinator, my journey manifests the transformation DIL brings to countless lives. My three siblings, once children of the slums like me, are now DIL graduates carving their own paths to success.

Recently, we witnessed a miracle that left us all in tears of joy – one of our students from Orangi, from these very streets where dreams often go to die, received an acceptance letter from Harvard University!

Our work isn’t just about statistics or numbers – it’s about real children, with names, faces, and dreams as big as the sky above Orangi.

The distance between you and DIL students may seem vast, but your heart can bridge it in an instant. YOUR ZAKAT, your Sadaqah this Ramadan could be the light that illuminates their path. Will you join us in this sacred month to transform not just a life, but generations to come?

With hope and gratitude,

Mantasha Asghar
College Coordinator
